The four sources, and how to tell them apart

Nearly every crawl space moisture problem traces to one of these, or to a combination. They look similar from the hatch and they are fixed by completely different work.

  • Evaporation from exposed earth. Bare ground releases moisture into the space continuously, in every season, with no event to notice. Fixed by covering the ground.
  • Humid outside air entering through vents. The dominant source in this climate for most of the year. Fixed by sealing the space and drying it — not by adding ventilation, which makes it worse.

How do I know which source I have?
